Why artists are trusting probiotics to treat GI disorders

Are you an artist with a GI disorder? Probiotics are living bacteria and yeast which are beneficial for human health. In recent times, many synthetic probiotic supplements are available which provide a large number of health benefits.  The most common of these health benefits include treatment of obesity and gastrointestinal tract disorders.

Let’s take a look at how probiotics work to provide these benefits.

Role of Probiotics in Treating GI Disorders

Probiotics treat a large number of digestive disorders which include diarrhea, irritable bowel syndrome, inflammatory bowel syndrome, diarrhea caused by exogenous bacteria which include salmonella, rotavirus, and shigella.

A scientific study was conducted to evaluate the role of different probiotics in this regard. It was double-blind, randomized, and placebo-controlled study which was conducted on test subjects suffering from one or more GI disorders. The two probiotics which were examined in the study include bifidobacterium and lactobacillus. At the end of the study, it was revealed that those test subjects who received probiotic treatment showed significant decrease in diarrhea and irritable bowel syndrome [1].

Probiotics also prevent the onset of different GI cancers which include colon and rectal cancer. This is because some probiotics cause inhibition of carcinogenic intestinal enzymes which initiate the process of hyperplasia i.e. abnormal multiplication of cells. This hyperplasia is the major cause of cancer in humans.

Role of Probiotics in Treating Obesity

Obesity is a major cause of cardiovascular diseases like hypertension, atherosclerosis i.e. hardening of blood vessels, myocardial infarction i.e. heart attack, and heart failure. There are many probiotics which are scientifically-approved for their role in the treatment of obesity.

A scientific study was conducted to study the effects of probioitc lactobacillus reuteri in this regard. It was a placebo-controlled, double-blind study which was conducted on obese individuals. At the end of the study, it was observed that the test group which was treated with the probiotic mixture showed appreciable decrease in their weight. No such results were observed in placebo-treated group.

The probiotic mixture was able to produce these effects because it caused significant decrease in the bad cholesterol i.e. LDL (low-density lipoprotein) levels. This LDL gets deposited in the body cells and tissues which leads to obesity. Increased amount of bad cholesterol can also form cholesterol plaques in the coronary arteries and other blood vessels which can lead to several cardiovascular and coronary artery diseases.

Probiotics also inhibit the cholesterol esters which get attached to saturated fat. This bonding of saturated fats and cholesterol esters leads to arterial plaque formation which hinders the oxygenated blood to reach the cardiac tissues. This condition can lead to cardiac hypoxia and damage of heart valves. Therefore, by inhibiting the cholesterol esters, probiotics also promote heart health in an individual [2].

What Can We Conclude?

On the basis of the abovementioned research, it can be concluded that probiotics can be effectively consumed for the treatment and prevention of different GI disorders and obesity. However, it’s advisable to start probiotic supplementation after proper recommendation from a registered medical practitioner in order to ensure patient safety.
